MAA Found Math for the Week of May 6, 2013
MAA FOUND MATH: Columnar basalt found by Adriana Salerno while on a hike through Maui, Hawaii. The formations are created by the quick cooling of basaltic lava flow. The column cross sections are often hexagonal, but may also have five sides.
