The Mathematical Association of America is seeking a highly qualified person for the position of director of publications to oversee MAA’s extensive publications program.
The MAA publishes more than a dozen high-quality textbooks and other mathematics titles annually. It produces three of the most widely read mathematics journals in the world (The American Mathematical Monthly, Mathematics Magazine, and The College Mathematics Journal), along with the highly regarded student magazine Math Horizons, the online journal Convergence, the online resource MAA Reviews, and the association newsmagazine MAA FOCUS.
The candidate should have a significant record of work in publications in the mathematical sciences. The position requires successful experiences in all or most of the following areas: book publishing; journal or magazine production; administration including financial management; editorial or reviewing experience; mathematical writing not limited to research publications; and electronic publication. Interest in and experience with online publication, grant administration, personnel management, and marketing are desirable. Advanced degree in the mathematical sciences or a related field is preferred.
The successful candidate should have the following:
A strong awareness and understanding of the changing publishing landscape, including issues such as electronic publication and open access;
Experience as a writer and editor of expository mathematics;
Exemplary administrative and communication skills; and
A vision for the future of MAA books and periodicals.
The director of publications oversees a staff of six at MAA headquarters in Washington, D.C., and the work of an off-site senior acquisitions editor. The director also works with the periodical and book editors, their editorial boards, and the MAA Council on Publications and Communications. Duties include personnel management, financial administration, production, inventory control, grant proposal writing and project management, media relations, and marketing, along with serving as editor in chief of the association’s newsmagazine, MAA FOCUS.
The director of publications reports to the executive director and is a member of the senior leadership team at MAA headquarters. The director works closely with other MAA staff members, national officers, section officers, committee chairs, and others in strategic planning and program development. Past directors have shown exceptional success in leveraging the efforts of our vast network of volunteer professionals.
The director of publications is responsible for ensuring that publications encompass the interests of all major constituencies of the MAA, embrace all areas of mathematics, and are easily available to all MAA members and the larger community interested in mathematics, especially expository mathematics and materials for faculty and students.
The position is located at the national headquarters of the MAA in Washington, D.C. Salary will be based upon the candidate’s credentials or current salary for a reassignment position.
