Betty Mayfield

Betty Mayfield is Professor of Mathematics at Hood College in Frederick, Maryland, where she has taught since 1979. She served as chair of the department for fifteen years and is currently the director of Hood’s Master of Science in Mathematics Education program.

Betty taught high school mathematics for one year after completing her undergraduate degree at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and then earned a doctorate from the University of Rhode Island, writing a dissertation on a mathematical model for the propagation of sound underwater. Her current research interests include the history and pedagogy of mathematics.

At Hood, she has been a recipient of the Mortar Board Excellence in Teaching Award, the Laughlin Award for Professional Achievement, and the Mary Ann Kerins Humanitarian Award. She especially enjoys teaching the senior seminar in the history of mathematics.

Betty became involved in the MAA through the Maryland-District of Columbia-Virginia Section, serving as newsletter editor, chair, and governor and receiving the Certificate of Meritorious Service in 2010. She has served the Association as chair of the Council on Meetings and Professional Development, first vice president, and chair of the Committee on Sections.
