Dr. Jim Daniel

Jim Daniel is a Distinguished Teaching Professor, Emeritus Professor of Mathematics, and Emeritus Director of Actuarial Studies at the University of Texas at Austin, where he joined the faculty in 1970. Semi-retired, he is a partner in and Director of Actuarial Education for Abacus Learning Institute, a firm that provides online and face-to-face courses for learners preparing for the actuarial credentialing process.

Jim received his B.A. (1962) from Wabash College and his M.A. (1963) and Ph.D. (1965) from Stanford, all in mathematics. He taught computer science and mathematics at the University of Wisconsin at Madison before moving to Texas. His research interests were in numerical analysis and optimization.

His MAA activities include having chaired the Publications Committee and Publications Council, the Audit Committee, the Budget Committee, and the Building Committee, and having served on the Board of Governors, the Executive Committee, various strategic planning groups, and other committees. He is a Life Member of the Association, and he and his wife Ann were inducted into the MAA Icosahedron Society in recognition of their contributions to the MAA; they now reside in Davis, CA.
