Deborah Tepper Haimo, 1991-1992 MAA President

Deborah Tepper Haimo was a mathematics professor at the University of Missouri-St. Louis. She served on many important MAA committees and restructured the MAA committees as president.

Presidency: 1991-1992

During her tenure as president, Haimo helped reorganize the MAA's committee structure, created the Franklin and Deborah Tepper Haimo Award honoring outstanding teaching, and encouraged the participation of women in mathematics at every level and in the MAA.

Education and Career

Haimo attended Radcliffe College, graduating in 1943 with both A.B. and A.M. degrees. She taught at Washington University from 1948 to 1961. Haimo received her Ph.D. from Harvard in 1964. She went on to a distinguished teaching career at the University of Missouri-St. Louis. She spent 1972-73 at the Institute for Advanced Study. After retiring in 1992, she moved to La Jolla, California, and became active in the department of mathematics at the University of California, San Diego, participating in seminars and social events.

Haimo won the MAA's Gung and Hu Distinguished Service to Mathematics Award in 1997.
