Programs and Services Internship
(Washington, DC)

The Mathematical Association of America, the largest professional society that focuses on mathematics accessible at the undergraduate level, is seeking an intern to assist the Department of Programs and Services. The start date for the internship is flexible, as is the number of days per week. The overall internship should extend for a minimum of six weeks between mid-May and early August.

The successful candidate will have opportunities to participate in the support and development of programs that serve the membership of the Association as well as the larger mathematical sciences community. The intern will work closely with Programs and Services staff, as well as the Director, to understand the goals of particular assignments.

It is expected that the primary responsibility of the intern will be to provide administrative support for a fall 2010 national survey of faculty and students in first year calculus courses. Through this project, the intern will get an insider's view of the development of survey procedures and how to ensure that the implementation of such a survey is successful.

Other responsibilities will include working with Programs and Services staff to redesign a database of the mathematical sciences departments across the US and Canada, and working with Meetings staff to prepare for our annual summer meeting in early August.

The ideal candidate is an upper-division undergraduate or recent college graduate with a major or minor in science, engineering, or mathematics. Proficiency with all Microsoft Office programs is a must; additional fluency with web-based programming is a plus. The MAA will provide a monthly stipend.

Please send a cover letter, describing what you hope to gain from the internship and how your previous experience makes you suitable for this position, your resume, and two references to Michael Pearson, Director of Programs and Services, at hr@maa.org.

The deadline for applications is May 1, 2010. MAA plans to make a decision by May 15, 2010.
