Join us at the Joint Mathematics Meetings!

Registration is open for the Joint Mathematics Meetings, January 13-16 in San Francisco, California. We hope you’ll join us for what is sure to be another exciting and successful meeting of the Mathematical Association of America and the American Mathematical Society. This year's Liaison Meeting is set for 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday, January 13, in room 3014 of the Moscone Convention Center. We hope to see you there.

Hard Problems Coming to Television

Hard Problems will begin airing on many public television stations this month. Click here or check your local listings to see when it will be on in your area.

The MAA-produced documentary is about the extraordinarily gifted students who represented the United States in 2006 at the world's toughest math competition: the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO). The film shows the dedication and perseverance of these remarkably talented students and captures the spirit that infuses the mathematical quest at the highest level. You can learn more or purchase the DVD through the Hard Problems website or at the MAA Bookstore.

E-Memberships

The MAA is excited to announce that we are now offering an all-electronic, green membership option! The all-electronic membership includes online access to all three MAA journals (American Mathematical Monthly, College Mathematics Journal, and Mathematics Magazine), and MAA FOCUS newsmagazine. For more information, see the article by Bob Anastasio, Director of Membership and Marketing, in the October/November issue of MAA FOCUS, also available online at www.maa.org/pubs/octnov09pg3.pdf.

Grant Opportunities

Regional Undergraduate Mathematics Conferences

These conferences are meant to allow students to present to an audience of their peers, as well as to expand their knowledge of the wide range of theory, history, and applications of the mathematical sciences at conferences that are within their geographic region.

We invite you to apply for funds to help you host a conference on your campus. Typical grants are between $1000 and $4000. Although proposals may be submitted at any time, we request that submissions for Spring 2010 be submitted by October 15. For additional information, visit maa.org/rumc. Funded by NSF Division of Mathematical Sciences DMS 0846477.

National Research Experience for Undergraduate Program (NREUP)

We invite mathematical sciences faculty to apply for a grant to host an MAA Student Research Program designed to support the participation of mathematics undergraduates from underrepresented groups in focused and challenging research experiences to increase their interest in advanced degrees and careers in mathematics. The deadline for receipt of proposals for summer 2010 is February 26.

For additional information, please visit maa.org/nreup/. Funded by NSF and NSA.

Tensor-SUMMA Grants: Strengthening Underrepresented Minority Mathematics Achievement

Proposals are solicited for programs designed to encourage pursuit and enjoyment of mathematics among middle school students, high school students, and/or beginning college students from groups traditionally under-represented in the field of mathematics.

Grants will be up to $6,000. Deadline for receipt of proposals is February 12, 2010. For additional information, please visit maa.org/programs/tensor-summa.html.

Tensor-MAA Women and Mathematics Grants

We invite you to submit proposals for projects designed to encourage college and university women or high school and middle school girls to study mathematics. Grants will be up to $6,000. The deadline for receipt of proposals is February 12, 2010. For additional information, please visit maa.org/wam/tensor.html.

Deadline Approaching for Undergraduate Poster Session at Joint Math Meetings

The deadline for submitting poster abstracts for the 2010 Joint Mathematics Meetings Undergraduate Student Poster Session is November 6, 2009. Note that students presenting at the poster session are eligible for travel grants. For more information, visit www.maa.org/students/undergrad/jmmposterindex.html .
