Liaison Newsletter – April 2011
As your department's MAA Liaison, thank you for keeping your colleagues and your students abreast of important MAA topics and events. Your work is especially important right now with spring section meetings, applications for summer research, and planning for MathFest (Lexington, KY, August 4-6).
At the Joint Math Meetings in January, there was a Liaisons meeting at which David Bressoud (outgoing MAA president) and Ivars Peterson (MAA Director of Publications and Communications) each gave an update on important MAA issues. Both of them expressed THANKS to all of you for the work you do, especially as you seek to inform students and non-MAA colleagues about the benefits of our association.
We Need Your Help:
1. MAA publications make excellent textbooks, but we need help understanding how textbooks are selected for mathematics courses. Please send information on your department's textbook selection process directly to Ivars Peterson at ipeterson@maa.org.
2. We also ask that you communicate with librarians to encourage libraries to subscribe to all three MAA journals (and Math Horizons) -- and let them know that libraries can now obtain electronic access to these publications. It's also helpful to remind libraries of any newly published MAA books that might be of interest. Information on library subscriptions to MAA journals is available at maa.org/libraries.
3. Programs need governance, so we are constantly looking for willing people to serve on committees. Whether it's colleagues in your department or MAA members you meet at meetings, begin to make note of those who you think are good candidates to serve. Make recommendations to your Section officers, and be on the lookout for the call for nominations for national committees at the beginning of 2012.

MathFest Abstracts due April 30
The deadline for submitting abstracts for contributed paper sessions for MathFest 2011 is April 30. Visit maa.org/MathFest/abstracts for instructions.
MathFest 2011 will be held in Lexington, KY, on August 4-6. As always, a stellar program is planned, including the Hedrick Lecture Series, this year delivered by Manjul Bharghava. This year, a new joint AMS-MAA lecture is planned, with Laura DeMarco lecturing on complex dynamics. In addition, a companion Invited Paper Session is planned for those who want to learn more. Regional Undergraduate Mathematics Conferences Proposals due May 15.
RUMC provides support to initiate or expand undergraduate mathematics conferences designed to attract students throughout the region of the host campus. The primary objective of the grant is to provide as many undergraduate students as possible with the opportunity to present mathematically-oriented talks and to better expand their knowledge of the wide range of the mathematical sciences at conferences that are within their geographic region.
Deadline for proposals for conferences in the 2011-12 academic year is May 15. For additional information visit maa.org/rumc.
Attend the 14th Annual Legacy of R.L. Moore Conference, June 2-4
The Educational Advancement Foundation (EAF) and MAA will co-host the 2011 Legacy of R. L. Moore Conference on June 2-4 in Washington, DC. The annual RLM Conference is an excellent opportunity to learn how to effectively use inquiry-based learning techniques in your classroom.

Online Euler Archive Has New Home at MAA
To help scholars undertake studies of Euler's remarkable achievements, Dominic Klyve and Lee Stemkoski began building the Euler Archive in 2002 while pursuing their graduate degrees at Dartmouth. Today, the Euler Archive is the largest online collection of Euler's papers and books in the world. On April 15, 2011, Euler's 304th birthday, the archive moved into its new home on the Mathematical Association of America's website -- eulerarchive.maa.org.
