Liaison Responsibilities

The purpose of this program is to give departments a chance to hear about opportunities that might interest faculty and students. Liaisons can receive anywhere from 5 to 20 emails a year, depending on what is relevant to their region and department. Here are some of the types of communications the Liaison may expect to receive from the MAA:

  • Information about regional programs, meetings, conferences and workshops for both colleagues and students (regional undergraduate math conferences, professional development workshops, etc.).
  • Calls for nominations for teaching awards, both national and regional (e.g., the Section's Distinguished Teaching Award).
  • Requests for feedback on proposed new MAA programs, particularly in the areas of electronic services and professional development. This is your chance to have a say in what kinds of programs are developed for mathematics faculty.
  • Invitations to suggest names of speakers or organizers for Section programs, and to make nominations for Section committees and offices.
  • Requests for department news to be included in the section newsletters.

Here is what we will ask Liaisons to do:

  1. Forward to other members of the department any of the items above of special interest to their colleagues, or post flyers in your department.
  2. Encourage all faculty and students to join the Association, participate in sectional and national activities, and subscribe to MAA publications such as Math Horizons, MAA's popular magazine for undergraduate students.
  3. Encourage participation in Putnam and Mathematical Modeling competitions and the formation of a Student Chapter on your campus, if you don't already have one;
  4. Send news from your department to Section newsletter editors.
  5. From time to time, the MAA may request feedback - information or opinions. Liaisons' responses will help shape directions of existing programs and guide new programmatic activities.
  6. Make suggestions to the Committee on MAA/Departmental Liaisons, at any time, about ways to improve the Liaisons program.
  7. Make suggestions, via the Committee on MAA/Departmental Liaisons, at any time, about ways to improve the MAA or MAA activities or programs.
