Itinerary for The MAA's Mathematical Study Tour Celebrating the 300th Anniversary of Euler's Birth

July 1, 2007 to July 14, 2007

Sunday July 1
Arrival in St. Petersburg, meeting and assistance at airport.
Transfer to hotel by motor coach.
Afternoon at leisure.
Welcome reception at the hotel, where we will meet with some members of the St. Petersburg mathematics community.

Monday July 2
Breakfast at the hotel.
Morning: Introductory lectures and discussions on Euler's life in St. Petersburg (Larisa Brylevskaya - Academy of Sciences)
Afternoon: Half day guided tour of St. Petersburg

Tuesday July 3
Breakfast at the hotel.
Morning: Guided bus tour to places connected with Euler's life in St. Petersburg, and visit to cemetery where he is buried. (Larysa Brylevskaya and Alexander Karp, Columbia Teachers College and a native of St. Petersburg)
Afternoon: Guided visit to Museum of M. V. Lomonsov, where rarities of Peter the Great's Kunstkamera and 18th century scientific instruments are exhibited. It is located in the old building of the St. Petersburg Acaademy of Sciences. Visit will be led by the director of the musum, T. Moiseyeva.

Wednesday July 4
Breakfast at the hotel.
Morning visit to Euler Archive in the Academy of Science, guided by the director Irina Tunkina. We will view selected documents of Euler's from the Archive and discuss the possible uses of this material.
Afternoon: Guided tour of the Hermitage.
Dinner on your own
Evening optional cultural performance, probably a ballet at the Marinsky Theater.

Thursday July 5
Breakfast at the hotel.
Morning reception at the Mathematical Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences at St. Petersburg. We will meet with Anatoly Vershik, the president of the St. Petersburg Mathematical Society and other St. Petersburg mathematicians. Lecture about the Academy of Sciences in the 18th century.

Friday July 6
Breakfast at the hotel.
Morning meeting with teachers who work with talented youth. This will be organized by I. Yu. Popov, the head of the Mathematics Department of the University of Information Technologies, Mechanics and Optics.
Afternoon at leisure.
Farewell dinner at St. Petersburg restaurant

Saturday July 7
Breakfast at the hotel.
Check out and transfer to the airport for flights to Basel.
Afternoon arrival in Basel, meeting and assistance at airport and transfer to hotel.

Sunday July 8
Breakfast at the hotel.
Morning city tour. Tour will visit Euler and Bernoulli sites, including the church in Riehen where Euler's father was a pastor.
Afternoon at leisure.

Monday July 9
Breakfast at the hotel.
Morning visit to University of Basel. Lecture on the preparation of the Euler Collected works, in the Old Aula of the University, with its impressive gallery of professors' portraits. Visit to Euler Archive.
Afternoon transfer to airport and flight to Berlin.
Arrival in Berlin and transfer to hotel.
Evening reception at the hotel, where we will meet with some members of the Berlin mathematics community.

Tuesday July 10
Breakfast at the hotel.
Morning: Half day guided city tour
Afternoon: Visit to the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences; lectures by Eberhard Knobloch and Ruediger Thiele on aspects of German mathematics in the 18th and 19th centuries.

Overnight at Hotel in Berlin

Wednesday July 11
Breakfast at the hotel.
Morning: Visit to the Humboldt University (formerly the University of Berlin). Lectures on the Berlin School of mathematics and on Jewish mathematicians in Germany.
Afternoon: Guided bus tour of sites related to Euler's life in Berlin.
Dinner on your own.
Overnight at Hotel in Berlin

Thursday July 12
Breakfast at the hotel
Morning: Visit to the DFG Research center MATHEON; discussion on aspects of German mathematics education led by Jurg Kramer, the head of the research center.
Afternoon at leisure.
Dinner on your own.
Evening optional musical performance with transfers.
Overnight at Hotel in Berlin

Friday July 13
Breakfast at the hotel
Morning guided visit to Potsdam, where the royal buildiings of Frederick the Great are located, and where Euler was involved in several projects.
Afternoon at leisure.
Farewell dinner at Berlin restaurant

Saturday July 14
Breakfast at the hotel
Transfer from hotel to Berlin airports.
