MAA TEACHER EDUCATION MINIGRANTS APPLICATIONS NOW AVAILABLE

The new NSF-funded initiative, Preparing Mathematicians to Educate Teachers (PMET), will be awarding minigrants each year to faculty for efforts to improve the curriculum and individual courses for future K-12 teachers of mathematics.  Awards will be in the range of $2000 to $5000. Applications are due by October 15th.  For further details, go to the PMET website www.maa.org/pmet and click on Minigrants in the left column.

NEW DEADLINE FOR NOMINATIONS FOR HAIMO AWARD

Please consult the MAA web site http://www.maa.org/awards/haimo.html for information on the Haimo awards, including the nomination form to be used, and the eligibility and guidelines for nomination.

The Haimo Awards committee requested this change in deadline (which has been approved by the Board of Governors at their recent meeting prior to Mathfest in Boulder, Colorado) with the hope that this change will generate more nominations.  It will allow (but not require) sections also to change their deadlines for nominations for section teaching awards. 

Help out your section by taking the time to nominate a candidate deserving of the MAA section teaching award!

HENRY L. ALDER AWARD FOR DISTINGUISHED TEACHING BY A BEGINNING COLLEGE OR UNIVERSITY MATHEMATICS FACULTY MEMBER

In January 2003 the MAA established the Henry L. Alder Award for Distinguished Teaching by a Beginning College or University Mathematics Faculty Member to honor beginning college or university faculty whose teaching has been extra ordinarily successful and whose effectiveness in teaching undergraduate mathematics is shown to have influence beyond their own classrooms. An awardee must have taught full time in a mathematical science in the United States or Canada for at least two, but not more than seven, years since receiving the Ph.D. Each year at most three college or university teachers are to be honored with this national award and are to receive $1,000 and a certificate of recognition from the MAA. Award recipients will be expected to make a presentation at one of the national meetings of the MAA. Nominations for the award may be made by any member of the MAA or by any section of the MAA.
