Join Us in San Antonio

Our annual MAA/Department Liaison Breakfast is set for Saturday, January 14, 2006, at 7:00 a.m. Note that this is a change from the printed schedule that appears in the program issues of both FOCUS and the AMS Notices. The location will be announced prior to the meeting.

This year's meeting promises to be another great meeting, with talks by Laszlo Lovasz from Microsoft and Keith Devlin talking on "The Mathematics of Everyday Language," among many others. We hope you can join us.

The deadline for submission of abstracts for contributed paper sessions is September 28. The deadline to register and qualify for the hotel room lottery is November 4, while the deadline is November 14 for those who wish to have their program mailed in advance. Survey on MAA Professional Development

The MAA Strategic Planning Working Group on Professional Development wants to hear from you and your colleagues. The Strategic Planning Group is "charged to examine issues, opportunities, and obstacles [in Professional Development] that impact the MAA’s ability to fulfill its mission and reach its vision" and will make a final report to the Executive Committee and Board of Governors next year.

We ask that you take a few minutes to respond to a web survey, available at www.maa.org/data/pd-survey.html. Please forward this request on to your colleagues, and ask that they respond as well.

Undergraduate Poster Session in San Antonio

The January 2006 Undergraduate Research Poster Competition will be held at the Joint Mathematics Meetings in San Antonio on Saturday, January 14, 2006 from 4:00-6:30pm. Please encourage students who have completed an undergraduate research project to submit their abstract online at http://www.maa.org/students/undergrad/poster06.html.

We are also seeking judges for the competition. If you or your colleagues are interested in judging the contest, they can submit their information online at http://www.maa.org/students/undergrad/judges06.html.

Math Horizons: A Pleasure Worth Sharing

The new issue of Math Horizons should be arriving in your mailbox any day now (you are a subscriber, right?). Third International Conference on the Teaching of Mathematics

Following two successful International Conferences (ICTM-98, Samos Greece, ICTM02, Crete Greece), the 3rd International Conference on the Teaching of Mathematics will address new ways of teaching undergraduate mathematics. The conference will be based at the hotel The Marmara in the center of Istanbul and will provide a unique international and centralized forum and bring together faculty members from countries with different educational and pedagogical systems around the world who are committed to introducing and using innovative teaching methods. Travel Grants for ICM 2006

The American Mathematical Society has received support from the National Science Foundation to provide partial travel support for U.S. mathematicians attending the 2006 International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM06) August 22-30, 2006, in Madrid, Spain.
