Liaison Responsibilities
Here are some of the types of communications the Liaison may expect to receive from the MAA:
- Announcements of MAA publications and programs, new grant projects, meetings, conferences and workshops, both national and regional;
- National news about the National Science Foundation and other federal agencies, and about Congressional legislation pertaining to collegiate mathematics;
- Tips on information available through the Internet of special interest to mathematicians and mathematics departments.
- Requests for feedback on proposed new MAA programs, particularly in the areas of electronic services and professional development.
- Invitations to suggest names of speakers or organizers for Section programs, and to make nominations for Section committees, offices, and Section awards (e.g., the Section's Distinguished Teaching Award).
Here is what we will ask Liaisons to do:
- Forward to other members of the department any of the items above of special interest to their colleagues;
- Encourage all faculty and students to join the Association, participate in sectional and national activities, and subscribe to MAA publications such as Math Horizons, MAA's popular magazine for undergraduate students;
- Encourage participation in Putnam and Mathematical Modeling competitions and the formation of a Student Chapter on your campus, if you don't already have one;
- Serve as conduits of news from Departments to Section newsletter editors and Webmasters;
- Act as a resource for Section Public Information Officers in their efforts to educate and inform the general public about the mathematics community.
- From time to time, the MAA may request feedback - information or opinions. Liaisons' responses will help shape directions of existing programs and guide new programmatic activities.
- Make suggestions to the Committee on MAA/Departmental Liaisons, at any time, about ways to improve the Liaisons program.
- Make suggestions, via the Committee on MAA/Departmental Liaisons, at any time, about ways to improve the MAA or MAA activities or programs.
