The MAA received a gift of $3 million from Paul and Virginia Halmos to establish a Mathematical Sciences Conference Center in Washington, DC. The Association plans to restore to its former charm the exterior of its historic carriage house, one of the three buildings in the MAA complex in the Dupont Circle district, and to renovate completely the interior, with ample additional space for mathematicians to meet in smaller groups or to work individually. For more information about Paul and Virginia Halmos and their gift to the MAA, please see the article entitled Major Donation Announced for New MAA Conference Center by G.L. Alexanderson in the February 2003 FOCUS.
The Carriage House belonged to the residents at 1529 18th Street, and dates to around 1900. It is older than the five-story townhouse where the MAA headquarters are currently located, which was completed in 1903. The Carriage House would have been used by the owners as a livery stable and to house the family carriage, though little else is known about its history today. There are huge sliding doors that are characteristic of a carriage house as the entrance for horses and carriage. Iron rings can still be seen on an adjacent building, which were used to tie up horses. Perhaps the carriage house would have also been used as living quarters for a coachman, as was typical for the time period.
The MAA Carriage House stands behind the MAA headquarters building, at 1781 Church Street NW, Washington DC. It is available to the public for rental.Your Carriage House rental fee covers your use of the rooms you have chosen and the foyer where catering may be set up, complimentary coffee and tea that we brew for you, the use of our small kitchen, a variety of A/V equipment including a Smartboard, LCD projector and microphones, and our services in assisting you to find low rates for hotels and catering if you need it.
