Making the Math Visible: Explorations in College Geometry Using the Geometer’s Sketchpad

Bill Fenton, Sr. Barbara Reynolds
June 4-11, 2006
Bellarmine University

Co-sponsored by Key College Publishing

Registration for this workshop is now closed

Participants will use The Geometer’s Sketchpad to gain hands-on experience constructing and experimenting with geometric diagrams to develop visual insight into geometric, trigonometric and algebraic relationships. Various topics from College Geometry – such as properties of triangles and circles, analytic geometry, transformational geometry and symmetry groups, taxicab geometry, the hyperbolic plane, and projective geometry – will be investigated using explorations that will enable workshop participants to see familiar geometric relationships in new ways. No background with The Geometer’s Sketchpad is assumed; skills will be developed as needed through working on the activities.

College Geometry Using the Geometer’s Sketchpad will serve as the text for this workshop. The unique feature of this text is that it introduces all the geometric concepts through computer-based explorations with Sketchpad.

In addition to mathematical content of college geometry, participants will experience firsthand a course taught using cooperative learning in a computer lab setting. Some of the class discussions will focus on the underlying pedagogy and issues of a course that utilizes these teaching strategies.

Participants will receive software, text materials, and other resources related to teaching geometry, teaching with cooperative learning, and teaching with technology. For more information, please visit the workshop web page at: http://faculty.bellarmine.edu/fenton/PREPworkshop.asp
