MAKING THE MATH VISIBLE: EXPLORATIONS IN COLLEGE GEOMETRY USING THE GEOMETER'S SKETCHPAD

In this workshop, participants will use The Geometer’s Sketchpad to gain hands-on experience constructing and experimenting with geometric diagrams to develop visual insight into geometric, trigonometric and algebraic relationships.  A variety of topics from College Geometry will be investigated, such as properties of triangles and circles, analytic geometry, transformational geometry and symmetry groups, taxicab geometry, the hyperbolic plane, and projective geometry. Hands-on explorations will enable workshop participants to see familiar geometric relationships in a new way. No background with The Geometer’s Sketchpad is assumed; skills will be developed through the activities.

College Geometry using The Geometer’s Sketchpad will serve as the text for this workshop.  The unique feature of this text is that it introduces all the geometric concepts through computer-based explorations with Sketchpad.  

In addition to the mathematical content of college geometry, participants in this workshop will experience firsthand a course taught using cooperative learning in a computer lab setting.  Some of the class discussions will focus on the underlying pedagogy and issues of a course that utilizes these teaching strategies.
