Teaching Arithmetic to College Students: Make It Meaningful by Making It Useful

Students who are placed into basic mathematics courses have frequently “mastered their mistakes” and are in need of new and innovative approaches to the learning of fundamental arithmetic concepts and skills. Engaging students in active explorations that are drawn from authentic workplace contexts can provide a new beginning for their mathematics education. This workshop is intended for college instructors who want to make a positive change in their basic mathematics course. Upon completion of this workshop, participants will be able to

• use activities and investigations to introduce topics appropriate for basic mathematics students.
• use the content of the basic mathematics course to model real-world contexts.
• provide opportunities for students to work effectively in groups and communicate about mathematics through writing and discussion.
• use technology when appropriate in the basic mathematics classroom.
• use a variety of teaching methods in the basic math classroom.

Participants will actively explore authentic real-world applications and discuss ways to revitalize their basic mathematics courses beginning in the fall of 2008.
