Math & Bio 2010: Linking Undergraduate Disciplines

Articles and Reports

The MAA Committee on Curriculum Reform and the First Two Years (CRAFTY), through the Curriculum Foundations Project, produced reports on the types of mathematics skills needed by students in other disciplines. Here are two reports from that series.
Mathematics Is Biology’s Next Microscope, Only Better; Biology Is Mathematics’ Next Physics, Only Better (PDF)
An article by Joel E. Cohen (Rockefeller University and Columbia University) that originally appeared in PLoS Biology, based on an earlier presentation (PDF). Appears by permission of the author.

Meeting the Challenges: Education Across the Mathematical, Biological, and Computer Sciences
Victor Katz, MAA Visiting Mathematician from University of District of Columbia

Modeling of Biological and Physiological Systems Using a Block Diagram Programming Language
Tom Cathcart, Department of Agricultural & Biological Engineering, Mississippi State University
Computational Ecology (PDF)

Quantitative Biology for the 21st Century (PDF)
A report prepared by Alan Hastings, Peter Arzberger, Ben Bolker, Tony Ives, Norman Johnson, Margaret Palmer based on two NSF funded workshops on Quantitative Environmental and Integrative Biology, the first held September 7-9, 2000 at the San Diego Supercomputer Center on the University of California, San Diego campus, and the second held December 11-13, 2002 at the University of California, San Diego. Appears by permission of the author.
