Robert Lee Moore (1882-1974) was an influential figure in twentieth-century mathematics, recognized as a founder of his own school of topology. The approach he developed for teaching mathematics, now called the Moore Method, is a Socratic technique that encourages students to solve problems through analysis and creativity. Moore summed it up this way in 1966: "That student is taught the best who is told the least."

The Moore method centers on self-constructed, discovery-based learning. Students are given definitions and axioms, and challenged to prove sequences of theorems on course topics. Instructors coach and guide; textbooks and reference sources are rarely used; and nearly all lecturing is out of the question.

Four practitioners of the Moore Method offer a practical overview of the technique. They present definitions of the method, and provide details and mechanics of their own applications. Chapters contain essays by each author on various aspects of the Moore Method.

Topics include the culture the authors strive to achieve in their classrooms; their grading methods; the development of their materials; and typical days in the classroom. More than 130 references support the themes and topics of the book. Included are sample tests, notes, and diaries on varying courses.
