MAA Report on the Status of K-16 Algebra Instruction Is Available Online

September 24, 2007

The MAA report "Algebra: Gateway to a Technological Future," edited by Victor J. Katz (University of the District of Columbia, emeritus), is now available online (pdf format).

Funded by the NSF, the report is the result of an MAA-sponsored conference that brought together about 50 representatives from the mathematics and mathematics education communities. Their aim was to gather information about what has been learned about the teaching of algebra and to identify common principles that can lead to improved algebra instruction.

The attendees were divided into five groups, each of which reported on the status of algebra instruction at a specific level. The groups were: "Early Algebra," "Introductory Algebra," "Intermediate Algebra," "College Algebra," and "Algebra for Prospective Teachers." A summary of the findings and recommendations of each of the five groups is also available online.
