The 2008 IMO Competition Begins

The U.S. International Mathematical Olympiad team arrived in Madrid on Saturday, July 12. After an evening of relaxing, the team visited the Palacio Real and eat lunch on the Plaza Mayor on Sunday afternoon.

The team participated in the circus-themed opening ceremonies on Tuesday afternoon. The first part of the exam, completed this morning, consisted of three problems: one in geometry, one in number theory, and one involving an inequality.

MAA Director of Competitions Steve Dunbar noted that the team was “rested, relaxed and ready this morning, and seemed calm and relaxed at lunch.” The team will rest this evening in preparation of the second day of competition tomorrow.

Competition deputies and each country’s team leaders will gather Thursday evening to begin the coordination and grading of exams.
