Demands for Teacher Quality Spur New Initiatives

According to an article in Education Week (December 4, 2002), the new federal rules requiring under-qualified teachers to upgrade their credentials by 2006 is spurring new initiatives outside of the more traditional teacher education programs. Since traditional schools don’t have an easy way to offer specific programs to school districts, various for-profit institutions, colleges that already have in-service teacher-training programs, and textbook publishers are rushing to provide solutions. School districts have welcomed such partnerships because they need to get into compliance quickly, but some educators worry that the programs do not offer the same level of preparation as traditional teacher preparation courses.
