International Mathematical Olympiad: U.S. Team Heads for 2007 Contest

The six-member U.S. team, accompanied by its coaches, departed the United States this week to compete in the 2007 International Mathematical Olympiad, which will take place in Hanoi in late July.

The students and coaches will have a layover at the Foreign Teachers' Dorm, at Tsinghua University, in Beijing, before heading for Vietnam around July 19. They are scheduled to stay at a dorm or hostel in Hanoi.

The IMO opening ceremony will take place on July 24, and the two-day contest will run July 25-26. The closing ceremony is scheduled for July 30.

The U.S. team consists of these math wizards:

  • Eric Larson, South Eugene High School, Eugene, Ore.
  • Brian Lawrence, Montgomery Blair High School, Silver Spring, Md.
  • Tedrick Leung, North Hollywood High School, North Hollywood, Calif.
  • Arnav Tripathy, East Chapel Hill High School, Chapel Hill, N.C.
  • Alex Zhai, University Laboratory High School, Urbana, Ill.

Accompanying the team to Hanoi are MAA Director of Competitions Steve Dunbar, IMO team leader Zuming Feng, and 2001 IMO gold medalist Ian Le.
