Kennedy Takes Over as Book Acquisitions Editor

Do you dream of strutting a future MAA MathFest with a midnight blue “MAA Author” ribbon attached to your nametag? Better talk to Steve Kennedy.

Acquisitions editor as of August 1, Kennedy’s the guy you have to sell on the brilliance of your book manuscript—and its suitability for the MAA catalog.

Kennedy received his Ph.D. from Northwestern University in 1988 and has, for 19 years, taught mathematics at Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota. He and his wife, fellow Carleton mathematician Deanna Haunsperger, coedited MAA’s student magazine Math Horizons from 1999 through 2003.

Kennedy, who traces his admiration for MAA books to his undergraduate days—he remembers stumbling upon a Carus monograph at the Boston Public Library—calls it thrilling to be given responsibility for continuing the MAA’s tradition of publishing the “best mathematical exposition in English in the world.”

He also appreciates that his predecessor, Don Albers—MAA director of publications for 14 years, editorial director for five years, and senior acquisitions editor for two—left him some big shoes to fill.

“I hope that I can live up to the standard of excellence that Don Albers has established,” Kennedy said when asked to reflect on his newly assumed editorship.

As acquisitions editor, Kennedy would like to increase MAA’s textbook offerings to include a variety of high-quality, reasonably priced books for each course in the undergraduate curriculum.

“I'm easy to find,” Kennedy says, “and eager to talk to anyone with a good idea for a mathematics book at any stage of their process.”
