June 9, 2010

Pacific Business News has named mathematician and MAA member Linda Furuto (University of Hawaii-West Oahu) to its select "Forty Under 40" group, which identifies the state's most accomplished leaders under 40 years of age.

Furuto is the founder of the UHWO Math Center, now the
No’eau Center for Writing, Mathematics, and Academic Success. Her key interests are ethnomathematics, mathematics achievement, quantitative research methods, and educational access and equity.

After obtaining her bachelor’s degree from
Brigham Young University and a master’s degree from Harvard University, she was a fellow at the East-West Center while completing her Ph.D. at the University of California, Los Angeles

"Linda uses her education and innovative blend of teaching methods to inspire hundreds of our students to think about mathematics in a whole new way, expanding their relationship with concepts that might otherwise be lost in typical classroom discourse," said Gene Awakuni, chancellor, UHWO. "Linda is one of the reasons we can all have confidence that the future is bright in Hawaii. Her insightfulness, mentorship, and personal generosity to today's generation of students are all benefits to our communities, our university and our state."
