Davis Equation Informs Gridiron Gambling

The so-called Davis Equation, the algorithm one-time mathematics professor Bill Davis uses to predict the outcomes of sports games, is garnering lots of attention this football season.

The sports analytics website Davis operates, btspicks.com, has an analytical staff and advisory board that include former front office employees of NFL, MLB, NBA and NHL teams, but there's math in the mix, too.

"Historical data is compiled and analyzed in multiple ways; T-testing, Chi squared tests of independence and analysis of variance tables are applied to the historical data. Taylor polynomials also map the data," says Davis.
