Writing in Quartz, Jonathan Wai argues that anyone who wants to be rich or powerful or equipped to solve 21st-century problems should major in a STEM field.

Learning mathematics develops one's ability to think creatively and recognize patterns in data, and these skills are widely applicable in today's world. "Research on mathematically-talented students followed longitudinally has shown that personal interests may lead many math majors to other productive careers and is beneficial for society," Wai writes.
