Elegant Solution to von Neumann-Day Problem

Cornell University graduate student Yash Lodha, in collaboration with professor of mathematics Justin Moore, has described a geometric solution to the von Neumann-Day problem.

The von Neumann-Day problem deals with the existence of groups that do not contain free groups and are also non-amenable. Examples that pre-date Lodha's either had an infinite or very large set of rules. The group Lodha describes, however, has only nine rules and a natural geometric model.
