Girls Gain Confidence to Do Math—through Dance

Through SHINE, a program whose mission is Supporting, Harnessing, Inspiring, Nurturing, and Empowering middle school girls to learn math by building their confidence through dance, founder and MIT senior Kirin Sinha hopes to combine two of her own passions to help get more girls into mathematics.

Sinha recruited 37 girls to participate along with MIT mentors in eight-week sessions of dance routines and math puzzles and reports that the girls showed improvement. Sinha, who will be studying mathematics and computer science next year as a Marshall Scholar, looks forward to exploring ways to integrate SHINE into the British education system.
