GitHub Enables Collaborative Authorship

Over the course of six months, a group of two dozen or so mathematicians at Princeton's Institute for Advanced Study (IAS) collaboratively authored a book on GitHub, a social network for hackers.

The book, Homotopy Type Theory: Univalent Foundations of Mathematics, will not garner its authors much in the way of academic prestige, given the unconventional platform on which it was published.

Andrej Bauer, who, when he's not at IAS, is a professor at the University of Ljubljana in Slovenia, says: "As far as my government is concerned, this book will be, say, the equivalent of my giving a minor talk at a conference."
