How to Handle Analyses of Big Data

Writing for the McGraw Hill Business Blog, Kaiser Fung describes two cases in which individuals with what he calls keen "numbersense" doubted the front-page conclusions drawn from analyses of Big Data.

Fung, who has written a book called Numbersense, says that in a Big Data "world of confusing and contradictory findings," skeptics like Zoë Harcombe and Felix Salmon will have a competitive edge:

Their well-honed numbersense allows them to stand firm in the face of mountains of data, worship of high science, formidable-sounding technical jargon, and academic reputations.
