Indirect Coupling Applied to Medicine and Ecology
Mathematicians at the University of Pittsburgh have applied the principle of indirect coupling—first observed by Christiaan Huygens in the seventeenth century—to measure the interaction of units that, like neurons, turn "on" and "off" repeatedly.
Jonathan E. Rubin, G. Bard Ermentrout, and Jonathan E. Rubin believe that their work will aid in the understanding of epilepsy and such phenomena as how bacteria use external cues to synchronize their growth.
