International Math Olympiad Results Bigger News Elsewhere Than in US

July 15, 2010

The U.S. team had one of its best showings in recent years at the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO), as announced on the MAA website on July 12, 2010. Yet the outstanding results—third place for the team (out of 96 teams) and second place for Evan O’Dorney (among 517 individual contestants)—rated scant mention in U.S. news media.

In contrast, English-language news reports of the IMO results appeared in Asia, Eastern Europe, and elsewhere.

Not surprisingly, Russian reports highlighted the success of Russia’s team—a second-place finish with four gold medals and two silver medals. A Taiwan report lauded a student who won a gold medal and set a record for the best personal score by a Taiwanese competitor in five years.

Other accounts of the results appeared in Vietnam (Saigon), IndiaJapanBulgariaPhilippines (Manila), and Peru.

Reports from China heralded the team’s first-place finish and the top score among all individual contestants.
