March (Mo)Mathness Educates a Crop of Bracketologists

The New York Times reported on a seminar Davidson College mathematician Tim Chartier conducted at the National Museum of Mathematics in which he coached attendees in the use of linear algebra to predict the outcome of the NCAA Basketball Tournament.

Interest in the event was fueled not only by the success Chartier and his students have had with their math-assisted brackets, but also by the $1 billion Warren Buffett and Quicken Loans are offering anyone who correctly predicts all 63 of the tournament's wins.
