Math Emporiums Enable Self-Paced Remedial Math

Following the example set by Kent State University, Cleveland State University has opened a Math Emporium.

Students will come to the computer learning center, housed on the second floor of the university's library, to complete remedial math courses at their own pace. As students work through the computer-based materials, they will receive assistance as needed from online help, workbooks, and graduate or undergraduate tutors.

Kent State's Math Emporium has been getting results, and Cleveland State math chair John Holcomb thinks he knows why:

One key issue with the emporium is instead of listening to a teacher explain, they get in there and do the work and that is the only way to do math—hands on.
