Math Makes for More Accurate Imagery

Computer scientists at the University of Texas Dallas have devised—using the Nash embedding theorem—a method of making 3-D images that more accurately approximate the objects they represent.

The method uses anisotropic triangles—triangles with sides that vary in length depending on their direction—rather than isotropic ones to form the triangle mesh used to represent shapes in the virtual world of computer graphics.

While the method will likely find application in movies and video games, the researchers hope their technique will lead to greater accuracy in the models of human organs that enable treatment of diseases such as cancer.
