Math Saves UPS Money

Over the next five years, UPS will roll out On-Road Integrated Optimization and Navigation, or ORION, a route optimization tool anticipated to save UPS drivers miles and the company itself money.

ORION will deploy heuristics to supply a best-yet answer to UPS's giant-sized traveling salesman problem, a problem complicated by the need to consider factors beyond shortest distance: promised delivery times and types of packages, to name two.
