Mathematics Enables Analysis and Conservation of Art

As Time reports, mathematical techniques are transforming the work of art historians and conservators.

Mathematics can help distinguish copies from originals or characterize and quantify the differences between artists' styles.

Duke University mathematician Ingrid Daubechies, who has been working with the North Carolina Museum of Art's chief conservator, says of math's entry into the art world: "We want to give you a third eye."
