Motivating Statistics with Sports Data

Writing in the PLOS Sci-Ed blog, Atif Kukaswadia advocates using sports to explain statistics.

Kukaswadia believes that "the way we teach statistics and math now is like asking a toddler to do cartwheels on a balance beam above a lake of hungry alligators before they can walk" and stresses the importance of illustrating concepts like skew and measures of center in contexts that connect with students.

In a post-Moneyball world, Kukaswadia says, a lot of sports data—"shots, goals, assists, batting averages, yards gained, completions, you name it"—is readily available online, so read his pitch and dig in!
