One of Mulcahy's Many Tricks

In an Alex's Adventures in Numberland post earlier this month, Alex Bellos praised MAA columnist Colm Mulcahy's recently published Mathematical Card Magic and described one of the "entertaining and thought-provoking tricks" the book contains.

Bellos outlined what Mulcahy dubs Fitch Cheney's Five-Card Twist, a trick in which a magician deduces a hidden card from the way in which his assistant has arranged four visible cards.

"The good thing about this trick is that you need an attractive assistant, which is one of the best things about being a magician," Bellos quipped.
