Profiling Cells with Math

January 28, 2011

In a recent paper published in Bulletin of Mathematical Biology, researchers from Ohio State have developed a mathematical model that can distinguish abnormal cells, such as cancer cells, from healthy cells.

"The model analyzes images sequences of single, live cells to determine abnormalities manifested in their shape and behavior," according to PhysOrg.com, which also reports that brain tumor cells were one of the cell types analyzed.

Huseyin Coskun (Ohio State University) describes the model as a useful first step toward developing mathematical tools for diagnosing cell abnormalities and for giving potential prognoses.
