Rota's Conjecture Resolved

Geoff Whittle, Jim Geelen, and Bert Gerards have solved a problem posed by Gian-Carlo Rota in 1970.

The trio says that while the collaborative work they've done over the past decade and a half has allowed them to assemble all the ingredients needed to prove Rota's conjecture, the real labor will come as they meticulously document their results.

Says Whittle:

It's a little bit like discovering a new mountain—we've crossed many hurdles to reach a new destination and we have returned scratched, bloodied and bruised from the arduous journey—we now need to create a pathway so others can reach it.
