Springer and Hebrew University Collaborate on Mathematics Journals

January 1, 2007

Springer and The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Israel, have signed an agreement to distribute and sell the Israel Journal of Mathematics and the Journal d'Analyse Mathematique.

The first issues under the new partnership will be published in 2007. International in scope, these journals publish contributions from mathematicians working all over the world.

Springer will manage all subscription and consortia sales, as well as electronic production and distribution of the two journals. The Hebrew University Magnes Press will handle the editorial, production print services, and distribution to subscribers.

The Israel Journal of Mathematics (a continuation of the Bulletin of the Research Council of Israel - Section F) first appeared in 1963. Publishing 2,280 pages each year, it contains high-quality research papers on set theory, model theory, algebra, group theory, number theory, analysis, functional analysis, ergodic theory, geometry, algebraic topology, combinatorics, theoretical computer science, and applied mathemaics. The interdisciplinary editorial board reflects the wide spectrum of mathematical fields covered.

The Journal d'Analyse Mathematique, founded in 1951 by Professor binyamin Amira, publishes 1,200 pages of top-level articles per year in classical analysis and related areas, including complex function theory, ergodic theory, harmonic analysis, partial differential equations, and quasiconformal mappings.

Professor Alex Lubotzky of The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, who is head of the General Editorial Board of the Mathematics Journals, said, "We welcome this collaboration with Springer. Israel in general, and the Hebrew University in particular, have a long history of excellence in mathematical research, making the journals first-class international publications."

Ehud de Shalit, Chairman of the Einstein Institute of the Hebrew University, added, "Cooperation with Springer will further strengthen the journals' development and will give us new technological and distribution horizons."

Ruediger Gebauer, President of Global Publishing at Springer, commented, "We are extremely pleased to work together with The Hebrew University in publishing such prestigious journals as the Israel Journal of Mathematics and the Journal d'Analyse Mathematique. Until now, neither has been available electronically. Our partnership will enable mathematicians worldwide to access the information online in this important field of science."

The Hebrew University was founded in 1925. It has several campuses and is home to more than 12,000 undergraduates, 7.600 master's students, and 2,600 doctoral candidates. Among its leading centers is the Einstein Institute of Mathematics, which is recognized as one of the world's leading research centers for pure mathematics. The work done there provides the theoretical underpinnings for many of the scientific advances achieved elsewhere in the world.
