New Features at the JSTOR Archive

The JSTOR database is an archive of important scholarly journals, offering researchers high-resolution, scanned images of journal issues and pages. It includes countless articles from MAA journals, including The American Mathematical Monthly and Mathematics Magazine. Now, JSTOR has added features that make the archive easier to use and more valuable as a scholarly resource.

  • Search results in Google and Google Scholar link to full-text content in JSTOR. Scholars who do not have direct access to JSTOR now have the option of purchasing individual articles from MAA journals.
  • JSTOR has introduced the ability to search image content, allowing users to retrieve search results for image content separate from JSTOR article content.
  • A new PDF format for downloading and printing articles enables users to find words and phrases within the PDF version of JSTOR articles. Users can copy and paste portions of text from these files. The new PDF files are also smaller, which allows for faster viewing and reduced download times.
  • A user's search terms appear highlighted within the articles that come up in the results.
  • A project to make all the reference links in articles live as hyperlinks began in 2006 and should be completed in the upcoming months.
  • A new sidebar on the article view page links to articles in JSTOR or Google Scholar that cite the current article.

Access to the JSTOR archive is provided by many college, university, and other libraries. To find out if your library is a JSTOR participant, use one of the following links:
United States: http://www.jstor.org/about/participants_na.html.
Other countries: http://www.jstor.org/about/participants_intl.html.

If your library is not on one of the above lists, look for a nearby library that does have JSTOR access and is open to the public. Members of the MAA have the option of purchasing an individual subscription to JSTOR that gives them access to the archives of The American Mathematical Monthly, Mathematics Magazine, and The College Mathematics Journal.
