George Ranich gave a talk on the class number of quadratic fields. When audience member L. J. Mordell commented afterwards that the speaker had "made no reference to a rather pretty paper by one Rabinowitz of Odessa," Ranich stammered, "I am Rabinowitz." He had changed his name when he moved to the U.S. The talk was at an AMS meeting at Vassar College. George Y. Ranich was then at the University of Michigan.
