Positions Open at Project NExT

October 12, 2011

Project NExT is a professional development program of the Mathematical Association of America for new or recent Ph.D.s in the mathematical sciences who are interested in improving the teaching and learning of undergraduate mathematics. It addresses the full range of faculty responsibilities in teaching, research, and service. The Project NExT leadership team comprises five positions: Director and three Associate Directors plus one two-year nonrenewable member of the team. The Director is currently Aparna Higgins with Associate Directors Judith Covington, Joe Gallian, and Gavin LaRose; Julie Barnes is the fifth member of this leadership team. The current search is for two associate directors and the one two-year member of the team; terms begin the week before MathFest 2012. The terms for the director and associate directors are four years, with a maximum of two terms.

The Project NExT leadership team works throughout the year to manage a professional program requiring extensive attention to detail. Team members nurture leadership qualities in the Project NExT Fellows and help with all aspects of the program. Specific tasks include reading applications and selecting Project NExT Fellows; planning and running the incoming Fellows' workshop preceding MathFest; evaluating the sessions; organizing logistics for Project NExT activities at JMM and MathFest; communicating with Fellows, consultants, and the MAA staff; helping Fellows organize sessions for the meetings; helping with management of email lists, the Project NExT webpage, and the Project NExT booth at each year's JMM; and helping Section NExT programs. The Project NExT leadership team heads a cadre of mentors who advise the Fellows on curriculum issues, for majors, minors, general education, teacher preparation programs, and interdisciplinary curricula; career issues, including balancing teaching, research, and service; and working with students, including undergraduate research. We seek applicants who have excellent oral and written communication skills; who work well within a team but also take responsibility for specific tasks; who exhibit both creativity and the capacity to pay close attention to details; and who embrace Project NExT's commitment to diversity. Compensation and travel are provided.

Send a resume of not more than 6 pages and a letter describing your qualifications and interest in the position; include the names of three references who can speak to your qualifications for a leadership position in Project NExT. More information on Project NExT can be found under professional development at the MAA website. Nominations and applications should be sent to the MAA Secretary, Barbara Faires, at secretary@maa.org or Box 15, Westminster College, New Wilmington, PA 16172. Review of applications is scheduled to begin December 5, 2011.
