Rep. Gordon, House Science Committee Chair, Announces Retirement

December 16, 2009

After serving 25 years in the House of Representatives, Rep. Bart Gordon (Tenn.) announced that he would not be seeking reelection in 2010.

Rep. Gordon was named Chairman of the House Science and Technology Committee in 2007, becoming Tennessee’s first full committee chairman in 30 years. In that position, he oversaw some 192 hearings on a wide range of topics, including the future of NASA, water research, and the first serious Congressional exploration of geoengineering. He was Chairman for the ratification of the America COMPETES Act (PL 110-69), which set out to increase research funding in sciences and strengthen educational opportunities in science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and critical foreign languages.

In a statement released by his office, Chairman Gordon said, "I’m proud of what we’ve been able to accomplish together in the Science and Technology Committee. On a bipartisan basis, we passed landmark legislation with the America COMPETES Act and the Energy Independence and Security Act. We’re bolstering math and science education; we’ve put our R&D accounts on doubling paths, and ARPA-E is off the ground."

"With the challenges our country faces," Gordon continued, "we have laid the foundation to rebuild our economy based on innovation, investments in research, and a sustained commitment to math and science education."

The Mathematical Association of America is grateful for Rep. Gordon's steadfast dedication to improving mathematics education and research in the U.S.
