Results of the 2012 Romanian Masters in Mathematics

The 2012 Romanian Masters in Mathematics was held in Bucharest, Romania February 29 - March 5, 2012. A team of six high school students were selected by the MAA's American Mathematics Competitions program to represent the USA in this invitational, Olympiad-style problem-solving contest. The 2012 team included:

  • Joshua Brakensiek, homeschooled in Phoenix, AZ
  • Mark Sellke, William Henry Harrison High School in West Lafayette, IN
  • Thomas Swayze, Canyon Crest Academy in San Diego, CA
  • James Tao, Fremd High School in Hoffman Estates, IL
  • Victor Wang, Ladue Horton Watkins High in St. Louis, MO
  • Dai Yang, Philips Exeter Academy in Exeter, NH

Victor Wang won a gold medal and the other five team members each won a bronze medal.

Razvan Gelca (Texas Tech University) served as Team Leader with Zuming Feng (Philips Exeter Academy) served as Deputy Leader. Feng said, "Our students did an excellent job—getting medals in RMM is a very difficult job because the contestant pool is very small and of very high quality." Romania and China tied for the first place this year, placing determined by the sum of the three highest scores from each team.

This is the fourth year that the MAA has sponsored a team at the RMM. The team was selected on the basis of their scores in the 2011 AMC competitions, the USA Mathematical Olympiad, and their performance at the previous summer’s Mathematical Olympiad Summer Program.

All problems, solutions, competitors, results, and scores can be found on the RMM website.
