Paul Halmos Commemorative Walk Grows by 100

The brick paths of the Paul R. Halmos Commemorative Walk represent the confluence of two bodies of water that help define the District of Columbia: the Potomac and Anacostia Rivers. The number of inscribed bricks in the walk grew this week as the MAA installed the third set of 100 bricks.

An Interview with Ruth Charney

Ruth Charney is Professor of Mathematics at Brandeis University. After receiving her undergraduate degree from Brandeis, she completed her Ph.D. at Princeton University. She help positions at the University of California, Berkeley, Yale, and Ohio State University before returning to her alma mater in 2003.

U.S. Culture Discourages Girls from Excelling at Math

Many girls possess a high aptitude for mathematics, a new study concludes, but few girls in the United States reach the highest levels of mathematical attainment. The nation urgently needs to improve how it identifies and nurtures such gifted children so that this pool of exceptional talent is not wasted, the study recommends.

An Interview with George Gherverghese Joseph

George Gherverghese Joseph was born in Kerala, southern India, and lived in India for nine years. His family then moved to Mombasa in Kenya, where he received his schooling. He studied at the University of Leicester, then worked for six years in Kenya before returning to pursue his postgraduate studies at the University of Manchester. At present, he holds appointments at the University of Manchester and the University of Toronto. He spends about three months every year in Kerala conducting research on the history of mathematics in that area.
