An Interview with George Gherverghese Joseph

George Gherverghese Joseph was born in Kerala, southern India, and lived in India for nine years. His family then moved to Mombasa in Kenya, where he received his schooling. He studied at the University of Leicester, then worked for six years in Kenya before returning to pursue his postgraduate studies at the University of Manchester. At present, he holds appointments at the University of Manchester and the University of Toronto. He spends about three months every year in Kerala conducting research on the history of mathematics in that area.

Marcia Peterson Sward, Former MAA Executive Director, Has Died

Marcia Peterson Sward, who served as the MAA Executive Director from 1989–1999, died on September 21, 2008. The cause was kidney cancer.

Marcia Peterson Sward leaves a rich legacy of programs and services to members of MAA, to the mathematical sciences community of faculty, students, and math lovers, and to the public.

MathFest Highlights from Science Magazine: Shifting Shapes, Wrapping Chocolate, Attacking Queens, and Packing Circles

MathFest 2008, which was held in Madison, Wis., in early August, was highlighted in the "News of the Week" section of the Sept. 5 Science. Barry Cipra wrote four mathematical news briefs about this summer's MAA gathering of more than 1,400 participants. He focused on hinged dissections, efficient wrapping of spherical chocolates, a queens-and-pawns chessboard problem, and packing circles on a torus.

Engineer Robert J. Lang has been interested in origami for a long time. "What first got me as a kid was just the idea that you can create all these different shapes from such a simple starting material—an uncut sheet of paper," Lang says.

An Interview with Martin Golubitsky

Martin Golubitsky is Distinguished Professor of Mathematics and Physical Sciences at Ohio State University, where he serves as Director of the Mathematical Biosciences Institute. He received his Ph.D. in Mathematics from M.I.T. in 1970 and has been Professor of Mathematics at Arizona State University and Cullen Distinguished Professor of Mathematics at the University of Houston. He is a former president of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics.

China Girls Math Olympiad: U.S. Wins Two Gold, One Silver, and Five Bronze Medals

The 2008 China Girls Mathematical Olympiad (CGMO) has wrapped up, and both of the MAA-sponsored U.S. teams are bringing home plenty of extra luggage. All eight girls who participated for the U.S. earned a medal.
